Beta: [livejournal.com profile] laurajo
Summary: Jack was looking forward to going offworld with SG-1 again, but he wasn't expecting it to be so... strange.
Author's note: Despite different prompts and a complete lack of communication prior to writing (though we do admit to collaborating on this author's note), [livejournal.com profile] laurajo and I seem to have exhibited our sharing of a single brain with this ficathon. We hope you'll just be as amused as we are about the whole thing!

I was mostly pretty happy to be going offworld with Carter and the guys again. I pretended that she’d talked me into it, sure, but the truth was that I was pleased when Landry called and said they wanted to have somebody more senior than a regular SG team leader, but not quite as senior as the president, at an offworld treaty signing.

Well, not so pleased about the ceremony part of the treaty signing thing. Or about having to give another speech. But going offworld with my team for the first time in months? Definitely happy.

That was probably because I didn’t realise it was going to be so… strange.

The village where the ceremony was to be held was over a day’s hike from the gate, of course. I know it makes strategic sense not to build your villages right beside the big metal ring with the kawoosh that vaporises things and brings Goa’uld to enslave and kill you, but sometimes I just wish we could skip the hiking. At least the weather was good.

The strangeness began with Teal’c, of all people. Well, really with Vala, but from everything I’d heard I pretty much knew to expect strangeness. She was exuberant, completely lacked a filter between her brain and her mouth, and was basically the polar opposite of your typical SG team member in every way imaginable, but for that I was prepared. It was the first words out of Teal’c’s mouth after thirty minutes or so of silent hiking that surprised me.

“I spy with my little eye, something beginning with R.”

Who was this man, and what had he done with my sensible, stoic teammate? The strangest thing was the way that nobody but me seemed to find anything strange. The opposite, in fact. They started guessing.

“River?” Daniel suggested.

Teal’c shook his head and Vala took her turn. “Rocks?”

“You are correct, Vala Mal Doran.” Teal’c said. “I see many large rocks in the distance.”

“Ha!” Vala did a little jump-spin thing and pumped her fist in the air. “I win! I spy with my little eye…”

I motioned Carter closer to me at the back of the group while the other four somehow managed to take five guesses before Mitchell figured out that Vala could spy trees. “Hey, Carter, two of them are aliens, how the hell do they know how to play ‘I Spy’?”

“If I told you Cassie taught them would you believe me?” Carter asked hopefully.

“I might have if you hadn’t put it quite like that. And if she was still twelve instead of twenty-one…”

The sun was dropping towards the horizon when I decided it was time to stop and make camp for the night. We had already covered more than three quarters of the distance from the gate to the village, leaving us only another couple of hours to hike in the morning. I figured we could use the rest, if only from the incessant ‘I Spy’.

The new SG-1 – and I can’t tell you how strange I still found that thought – got to work setting up camp. Sam, Mitchell and Teal’c grabbed a tent each and started to pitch them in a small semi-circle around the area where Vala was laying, moving, and re-laying a small circle of stones to make the boundaries of a campfire. Daniel went looking for fire wood and I decided to ‘oversee’ the proceedings from a nearby tree stump.

“Y’know, Jack, at least Vala’s bothering to pretend that she’s helping…” Daniel said pointedly, as he dropped a pile of small tree branches beside Vala and began building them up to start the fire. He winced as Vala frowned and elbowed him in the ribs, but didn’t take his comment back.

“I’m supervising.” I argued. “It’s an important job. Who’ll help out in an emergency if there’s nobody overseeing things?”

“Hate to break it to you, Jack,” Daniel replied, “but if I have some kind of fire-building emergency, I’m pretty sure I’m going to ask either Sam or Teal’c for help.”

“Hey!” Both Cameron and I complained simultaneously. I guess he was having some trouble with the whole ‘new SG-1’ thing too. Can’t say I felt sorry for him, but it was nice to know. Almost as nice as watching Carter getting quietly flustered over the idea of having two senior officers irritated because of her without even having opened her mouth.

“Hey, Daniel, wake up” Carter whispered through the flap of the tent I was sharing with him. Daniel didn’t stir. She really should’ve known better; Daniel doesn’t wake up for much less than a nuclear explosion. Or the smell of coffee brewing - that attracts him pretty fast. “Daniel!” she whispered a little louder, but still got no reaction.

“You want me to kick him?” I asked. Carter seemed surprised to find me awake to begin with, but she came to her senses quickly.

“Yeah, I should’ve known better than to think you’d sleep through that, shouldn’t I?” She said with a slightly sheepish smile.

“In the field, definitely.” I agreed. “I sleep a little deeper at home, but I really hope that whether I can sleep through you calling Daniel’s name is an issue that never arises in my bedroom…”

“Believe me when I say I hope so too,” Sam agreed with a grin and then looked over at Daniel still curled up fast asleep. “Go on, kick him. I want to talk to him.” I aimed a foot at Daniel’s shin and then quickly pretended to be asleep as he sat up, blearily rubbing his eyes in confusion.

“Come on out here for a minute, Daniel.” Sam said, and moved out of the tent, apparently under some delusion that tent walls are thick enough to muffle conversation held at normal volume on a very quiet night. In most situations Carter is a genius, but sometimes… not so much.

Daniel grabbed for his glasses and sleepily followed Sam out of the tent. “What’s up?”

I watched their shadows, thrown against the wall of the tent by the small campfire we’d kept going for the person taking watch. “My watch is almost up, yours starts in ten minutes.”

“My alarm would’ve woken me for that…” Daniel protested.

“I know. I wanted to ask you a favour.” Carter paused for a moment, as if she was reconsidering asking the favour at all, then obviously decided to plunge ahead. “When your watch is finished don’t come back to this tent, go and sleep in mine.”

“Uh… okay.” Daniel thought for second before asking. “Do I want to know why?”

Carter sighed. “Don’t think too hard about it. Just embrace the fact that you’ll be sharing a tent with Vala for an entire six hours, and don’t ask me awkward questions, okay?”

“Okay, okay. Just… keep it down.” I didn’t have to be able to see Carter’s face right then to know it was turning crimson.

“Oh, don’t look so shocked.” Daniel said with a laugh. “You’re not so innocent.”

“Yeah,” Sam agreed as I heard her move back towards the tent flap, leaving Daniel to start his watch. “I know.”

“Don’t you dare try to tell me your team isn’t strange!” I insisted. Carter was curled up on her side, I was spooned against her back, and whilst I’d usually be far too distracted for conversation in such a situation, I had a bone to pick with her.

“You got me to agree to come on this mission by making me two promises: it would be me out with SG-1 ‘just like old times’, and you would make sure Daniel did all the talking at the ceremony.”

“I will make sure Daniel does all the talking tomorrow. It’d probably be a bigger challenge to stop Daniel from doing all the talking.”

I had to admit she had a fair point about Daniel, but still… “Okay, that one I’ll give you, but this is really not much like old times.”

Sam turned in my arms until her face was inches from mine and smiled that special smile she keeps for occasions when she’s feeling particularly wicked. “Well, you wouldn’t want this mission to be too much like old times, would you? There would be so many things we couldn’t do…”

I looked into Sam’s eyes as they sparkled with anticipation. How the hell did I get lucky enough to have this amazing woman even look at me twice, never mind want to be lying in my arms? I traced her cheeks with the tips of my fingers, then moved to her lips before settling on the backs of her shoulders to pull her close to me.

“Change can be a good thing,” I conceded, before closing the final gap between us and kissing her the way I had wanted to all day.

“What the hell is that noise?” I mumbled as I woke to a sound not unlike a chainsaw cutting logs.

Carter raised her head slightly from her position sprawled across my chest and winced. “It’s Cam. He snores. Try to ignore it.”

“You’re kidding.” I said, incredulous. That much noise was coming from the nasal passages of one human being?

“I’m not kidding. Wear these.” Carter reached into the pack, rummaged around until she found a small packet and thrust it at me before promptly going back to sleep. I opened the box and looked at the contents. Earplugs.

“Maybe the desk job isn’t so bad after all…”

Hee! Awesome. This was so great. The New Team freaks me out a little, but I love watching Jack fit into it (or not). Well done!

Thank you, I'm really glad you liked it. I love the new team, they're fantastic, but I can't help thinking Jack'd think they were a little odd *g*

Heh! I second that. It's definitely awesome to see Jack slotted into the new SG-1. *nods* Great characterisation there, too. Yup. I love it! =)

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. And I'm glad it seems to have been at least a little bit funny. That's what I was going for, but I'm never sure I'm going to hit the mark with humour!

Aw, this fic made me giggle so much. The 'new' team is indeed a strange thing to behold, but seeing it from their ex-CO's perspective would have been even harder to understand.

Love Vala and Teal'c playing iSpy and just all the little things that weird Jack out. Conversation between Daniel and Sam? Priceless ;)

I'm sorry I took so long getting to this -- I was trying to avoid the ficathon stories until I posted my own!

This is great. I always like seeing the new team through Jack's eyes. The I Spy was especially funny and the ship is very cute.

Thank you so much!
