Rodney was in the lab when his tablet pinged to indicate new mail. He scrolled down to the new message and laughed.

R,

Come to my office ASAP. Bring chocolate.

E

P.S. A LOT of chocolate.

Grabbing his secret stash of Hershey's Kisses from its latest hiding place (safely taped to the underside of his middle desk drawer) Rodney made his way to Elizabeth's office to find out what had gone wrong this time.

*****

Four hours earlier…

"Dr Weir?" Lindsey Novak knocked lightly on the open door to Elizabeth's office, and entered as Elizabeth looked up and smiled.

"Lindsey, what can I do for you?"

"I've brought the report on the repairs to the Daedalus' hyperdrive." Elizabeth crossed from behind her desk to take the report Novak held out to her, scanning it briefly before placing it on her desk.

"I'll add it to the pile of things that need my signature, thank you." Elizabeth said with a smile. "At first glance the work seems to be coming along nicely."

"Yes, at this rate we should have the hyperdrive fully operational and ready to head back to Earth in time for Christmas."

"That's excellent, and I imagine it makes quite an incentive for the repair teams to work as fast as they can."

"They practically have to be ordered out of the engine room for breaks."

"Are you heading back to the Daedalus now, Lindsey?"

"Via the control room, yes, Ma'am."

"Could you save me some time and take this file to Colonel Caldwell when you go?" Elizabeth picked up a folder from her desk and moved towards the doorway with Novak, who no longer seemed to be listening to what Elizabeth was saying.

"Lindsey?" Elizabeth said, raising her voice slightly to get Novak's attention. Then Elizabeth followed Novak's gaze to the sprig of greenery hanging above the office doorway. "Is that what I think it is?"

"If you think that it's mistletoe, then yes, it's exactly what you think it is." Novak held Elizabeth's gaze for a moment, took a slow deep breath, and leaned forward until their lips met gently.

"…and it took me so long to realise what was happening that I'd barely even kissed her back when poof!" Elizabeth threw her hands up in a wild gesture obviously intended to exemplify the sound.

Rodney raised an eyebrow. "Poof?"

"Poof!"

"Any chance you're going to define 'poof' for me?"

"Hermiod transported us to the Daedalus!" Elizabeth put her head down on her desk and groaned. "He and Caldwell were right there on the bridge, watching us…" She gestured toward her lips.

"And you managed to encompass that entire situation in the word 'poof'. Very impressive." Rodney paused. "Although really, I'd say it's more like a hum…"

"Rodney."

"…or perhaps a lightsaber sound."

"Rodney!" Elizabeth waited until she had his attention. "Any time you want to say something helpful…"

"Well, you know, I'm sure nobody was surprised. It's not like there's anybody on Atlantis who hasn't noticed the pathetic little looks she gives you…"

"She does not!"

"Or the fact that you look in the mirror five hundred times a day when the Daedalus is here."

"Okay, Rodney. You can stop comforting me now. Thanks."

"Here." Rodney thrust a handful of Kisses across the desk. "Eat these, then tell me what happened next."

*****

Elizabeth squeezed her eyes tightly closed and told herself it wasn't true. She told herself once, then again, and then one last time for good measure.

Kissing, or to be more accurate getting kissed by Lindsey Novak in the doorway of her office was overwhelming enough. Getting kissed by Lindsey Novak somewhere even more public than that was simply not possible, and it was categorically not happening. Elizabeth was doing fairly well at convincing herself of this until…

"Hic!"

She felt the jolt run through Novak's body and leaned forward to murmur, for her ears only. "We're on the Daedalus, aren't we?" She felt Novak's responding nod.

"Everybody's looking at us?" Another nod.

"And there's no way to get back to my office and pretend this never happened, is there?" This time Novak's head-shake was in the negative.

"Okay…" Elizabeth took a deep breath. "Okay."

Elizabeth stepped decisively away from Novak and turned towards Colonel Caldwell's command chair, hoping desperately that her face wasn't as red as it felt.

"Any chance you didn't just see that?"

Caldwell leaned back and folded his arms. "No chance whatsoever, Dr Weir." He turned to Novak. "Get back to your post, Doctor."

Novak snapped to attention. "Yes, Sir." She said, and left.

"Now, Dr. Weir," Caldwell said, turning to Elizabeth and rising from his chair. "We should probably have a conversation."

*****

"You realise you're the only person in Atlantis who hadn't noticed that mistletoe, right?"

"What are you talking about?"

Rodney leaned back in his chair and unwrapped a Hershey's Kiss. "Half the city has been trying to get you to stand still in your office doorway for the last three days, and you didn't notice?"

"Rodney McKay, say something helpful right now or I'll throw Hershey's Kisses at your head!"

"Caldwell's almost certainly going to stop hitting on you now."

Elizabeth laughed. "You know, that's probably true. I guess there's that one positive."

"Only one?"

"What do you mean?"

"You didn't talk to Novak?" Rodney asked incredulously. "She made an idiot of herself, not to mention risked her career, by kissing you in a semi-public place filled with potentially-homophobic military personnel, and she didn't even get a date out of it?"

"Oh, uh, yeah."

"So tell me about it!"

*****

Elizabeth tapped gently on the door of the engine room. "Lindsey, do you have a minute?"

"Oh, yes. Sure." Novak put down her tools, closed the door to the compartment she had been working on, and came to stand by Elizabeth.

"You're not hiccoughing anymore."

Novak nodded. "That's probably because Colonel Caldwell's not glaring holes into me anymore."

"Would you start hiccoughing again if I suggested we have dinner later?"

"Why don't we find out?" Novak said with a nervous smile.

Elizabeth touched Novak's hand and held her gaze. "Lindsey, will you have dinner with me tonight?"

"Yes, I'll have dinner with you." Novak smiled. "And I'll disable the Daedalus' transporters before I come over."

*****

"So, it was worth it in the end?"

"Oh, yeah." A slow smile spread across Elizabeth's face. "It was totally worth it."
